First National Bank of Boston is established.
1859
Originally the Safety Fund Bank, it is located at 17 State Street. Chartered on February 1, 1864, it is the first Boston bank to become a national bank under the National Banking Law of 1863. The bank merges with the Massachusetts Bank in 1903, opens a new headquarters on Federal Street (first) at in 1908,* and another (second) in 1923.* Subsequently called the Bank of Boston, it merges with Fleet Bank in 1999, and is acquired by Bank of America in 2004.
